Futsal Madness

We had the talented Felipe and Juliano from Futsal Auckland visit our school for the last 4 weeks. They taught us the basic skills to Futsal and on our last session we actually got to play two games.

Futsal is awesome. We all had fun and it was super cool having Felipe and Juliano teaching us. They were always giving us high 5s for doing a great job !

A lot of us had to show resilience when playing as we didn't know the rules, tripped and fell, banged into people and also lost. But we got over it and enjoyed our time.

Thanks Futsal Auckland

Check out Oliver and Romy's handwriting. They were the stars of the week because they followed the directions correctly, tried to keep all their letters the same size and it was very neat and tidy.

Well done!

My Cousin

On the 29th of February,  my first  girl cousin was born. She was born on a leap year. Her name is Neve.  She lives in  Wellington. I can't wait to visit her.  I bet she will have more clothes than I do by the end of the year.

I hope to meet her really soon.

Molly

My new kitten.

Last Thursday, me, mum and dad went to the Papatoetoe vet to get a kitten. Mum said that we were going to take it home on Saturday, but we took it home on Thursday instead. The kitten is called Minty. She is six weeks old. Minty and her sister were found down the side of a bank. Zoe, our dog is scared of Minty. Minty is an awesome kitten.

Ina's Bad Fall

On Friday I had a really bad fall off the Grey Lynn school steps. It was really painful so I had to go to the sick bay, but after that I had to go to Starship hospital.   It was really sore because I had to have an x-ray.  It was a little bet sore so after that so I got a treat from my mum. It was a little chocolate and it was really good but the doctor said I was not allowed chocolate because my leg was getting swollen so I had to get another  x-ray and this x-ray was hurting a lot more so my mum gave me a chip, but it was not nice becauseIi didn't like bbq chips. After that I went in to a really cool room to get on my cast. It was heavy so my mum had to hold my cast and then I had to hold it all by myself.  It was getting lighter so it was all finished. I got my crutches and I went back home.

Respect !

Today we discussed the Grey Lynn School values.
They are:
 Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

We used the Thinkers Keys to help us understand what respect is. We decided to use the Alphabet Key.

Enjoy our A-Z of how we show respect in the classroom. And, as Petra said, we used artistic license when it came to the letter, X.

Stay tuned to learn more about our values. Does your school have values? Share them with us !

Ina's holiday

We went into a spa and it was hot and when we got out and went in the big pool it was really cold so we went back out and ran really fast into the big pool and it was also cold so I went to the diving board. When I jumped into the pool it was cold and I still went into the pool but when I went in the pool it was not cold. It was nice and cool. So I got up went and saw James and he went on the big diving board. James did a bomb with Ben. It looked really big and cool. I did a bomb too and the people said it was big but I said it didn't go big it went... really big. After that I went onto the big one and I did a bomb. It went big. So big, Bigger than James' and Ben's bomb! The next day we went to the movies to watch Sione 2. It was really sad because Sione died. After that we went to the arcade game room then we went home.

Seeing blue penguins.

Up, up,up,up! Round and round. The camper van went up and around. Then we were at the top. When we were down at the bottom of the Otago Peninsula there was a seal right up on the rocks. But whew, what a smell! The little blue penguins didn't come in to about 9:30pm. But when they did there were around 150 of them!!!!When they came in they were like a little black wave. The first little blue penguin I saw was a baby.It had come out of it's mother. My favorite was when a little blue penguin came right past the rock I was standing on.What an a amazing trip!!

Birdies Almost Dead

It all started when me and my class, Room13 went for a swim. We left our classroom windows open as it was very hot. When we came back all the Year 6 kids next to our class were yelling at us that something bad had happened.  When we got back from our swim we had to wait outside to see what happened to our birdies. Then a teacher called Ruth from Room 11 told us that she saw our budgies flying next to her classroom.  A cat called Pepper knocked over the cage and one of our birdies called Nudge got out but Ruth shooed Nudge back into the class and she ran for help from Margaret. Eventually they caught the birds and  put them back in their very broken cage.  Nudge bit Margaret but she's ok. Andrea let the birdies rest in the office. Luckily the birds lived. Their little chests were going up and down because they were so scared. When Andrea got home she looked for a new cage on the internet. Lucky for us, Andrea's nanny, Lesley, had an old cage we could use in the meantime. Nudge and Tweet are now getting used to their new cage and soon we will let them come back into the classroom once they are calm.  We don't want Pepper to come back and finish what he started! Now we close our door everytime we leave the class and make sure all the windows are closed.

Emotion Poems

WALT write emotion poems. We wrote two examples in our writing groups and then did our own in our books.

Let us know what you think and if the poem made you feel the emotion we were trying to convey.

Happiness

Happiness is yellow like a sunflower.
It tastes like chocolate icing on a banana cake.
It looks like a rain shower of gumballs.
It sounds like unending laughter.
It feels like victory.

Sadness

Sadness is grey like a rainy day.
It tastes like cement drying down your throat.
It smells old and damp.
It looks like a dying bird on a street.
It sounds like a lonely echo in a dark cave.
It feels like no one cares.

Elijah The Man

Once upon a time there was a man named Elijah. He was fit as. He had abs, biceps, nice hair and super powers too. But on the 27th of May, Elijah's birthday something bad happened. This evil witch named Ching Chong Ling Long came to get his essence so he could be a massive as giant and take over the world. While Elijah was drinking his protein shake down in his secret lab he saw that the evil indicator saw trouble downtown and so he went downtown. Ching Chong Ling Long said, " At  last, we meet Elijah!" and Elijah said, " Enough talk. Let's fight."  It was a battle of the century. There was boom, bang, and a smash. At the end Elijah just put him in the woshi finger hold.  He 'said' skudosh and that the end.  Elijah won.

The Big Bad Bully

Elijah, Gwyneth and Oceania decided to make a comic about relationships being powerful. They decided to use the idea of bullying to show this.

They used the iPad 2 to take photos using the APP Comic Strip and also added text to their photos.  It was then downloaded into iphoto and then imported into iMovie. Then they used a storyboard to plan their text. Then Elijah and Oceania added music and transitions to their movie.

This is the students' work, 100%. They worked well and are now the class experts and will teach the other students.

So keep checking back for more iMovies soon !

The shape of rain

I have been learning to write poetry and choose the best words in the best order. I also used words from the water word wall and my own words to write the poem.

I created my poem using the website, http://www.readwritethink.org and then I took a screenshot of the poem I created. I dropped it into iphoto and then imported it into Kid Pix to add a background.

The website is on our blog under Fun Stuff to do. I think you should give it a try.

Moon Cakes are what Chinese people eat  to celebrate  in Autum because there is a full moon. But it also is the brightest moon. They also have all types of flavors. My uncle's mum makes them for us to eat.

They also are in adds, movies and other things. Everyone in China and Malaysia eat them (but only if they like the taste of it.) I have given few to my friends and they said that they were delicious. I think they are yummy too. I think that YOU should try it!

Flynn's Amazing Fractions

Maths
I am learning to write a number problem using fractions.
I got the problem 1/4 of 860.

In swimming lessons there are 860 people. The manager wants to split them up in four groups how many people are in each group?
How I got the answer.
There were two ways:
1.  I divided it by 4.

2. I halved 860 and that equalled 430 then I halved 430 and it equalled 215.
So 1/4 of 860 is 215.
How I checked it was correct?
I multiplied 2x215 but I also multiplied 430x2 which gave me the answer 860.

Flash Mobs - The GLS students take over !

We have heard and seen all these flash mob hakas around New Zealand. What a cool idea!

Friday the 9th September was the opening of the rugby world cup. We have been learning about the RWC in our class and sharing our learning via our news show and stories.

On Friday, our teacher said we were going get our photo taken by the new Manu Samoa sign. When we got to the road we noticed the whole school there and then we heard the call...we started singing and performing a haka - our own flash mob haka! Traffic stopped and people were recording us on the phone cameras. Cars were honking. It was so cool and fun. We hope you like the movie about our flash mob haka!

Our crazy morning tea

On Monday 6th of September three Manu Samoa rugby team players came to our school. It was crazy. Everyone wanted an autograph from each rugby player. Children were running in and out the class getting new things that they could sign. Everybody got autographs  but it was packed people keeped pushing and tugging. In was chaos  but so much fun getting to meet the three rugby team players .They all had a different autograph. One autograph was huge the other two were small . We loved it  because it was the first time ever we all got to meet them. It was even more special since our school has adopted Manu Samoa as our rugby team!

How nervous it was to be in the speech finals.

We got in the school speech finals in the Totara speeches. We were very nervous, especially Elijah. Ten people had to say their speech but the worst part for Elijah was there were a lot of people and James' worst part was when he had to say his speech because he thought he was going to go first. But Elijah was first and he was so nervous he got some words wrong. All the people did good speeches. The audience was very respectful. But me and James didn't win, but this girl named Queenie won and her topic was the theater. By Elijah & James

Hailly day

Today it hailed really, really hardcore.  It was really cool and lots of people got hail in their hair . When we first saw it Andrea said we could go out and try and get some. When we got there the whole Totara team was already there. Everyone got hail in their hair and it melted and some people got their hair wet.
It looked like it was snowing. Everyone started to see that it would melt as soon as we went inside, well at least I thought of it that way. HaHa. Anyway, it was pretty cool how the sleet was going onto their heads. When we got inside it was starting to get settled onto the ground. Lots of people thought it was snow but I didn't think that. So do you want that to happen were you are right now because its really F.U.N.
Oh and don't worry about danger when it strikes. And so that was our story about the hail day at Grey Lynn school.
