The Leaves
My group has been looking at our plant for little time and our plants are growing. I can't wait to see how big and strong it is going to be. I am trying to think what colour it is going to be. It is getting its leaves. We are getting one bigger and one tiny. The bigger one cooler because it is going to be a flower and I like flower. By Alexandra

Inventions Key and Swimsuits for Chickens!
We really enjoyed reading Funny Frank by Dick King Smith. It is from our school library. Frank is born a cockerel but he wants to be a duck. A little girl finds him and wants to help him so she asks her mum to make something fro Frank to swim like a duck.
We used the invention key to design our own suits for Frank. We used labels to show the parts and designed many different suits that we thought would work for Frank.
Enjoy the slideshow.

Does a Giraffe have a blue tongue and other questions during writing!
In Guided Writing time we write with Andrea in small groups. We do our best writing here. We all talk about what we want to write and how we're going to do it. We help each other with ideas and then we get on with our writing.
If we get stuck on a work, we have a try at spelling it in our Try Book. If it's right then we can get on with our writing. If we still need help spelling it then we have a mini spelling lesson with Andrea. Once we have learned the word then we can get on with our writing.
It's the same process with our handwriting. If we do a letter the facing the wrong direction then we do a mini handwriting lesson as well. We fix up the wonky letter and then get on with our writing.
Sometimes during writing we get stuck on what to do next or we have a question about something particular.
For example, we were writing animal riddles and we needed accurate facts about them. We used the ipads to look at images, or facts and then we get on with our writing.
We say that a lot during guided writing. We have a lot of tools we can use so we can "get on with our writing."

Eco Warriors in Action
Room 16 is participating in the Tui Garden Challenge. We have adopted the garden behind our classroom and where students park their scooters.
We are using the Inquiry Process to investigate how we will transform the garden to help answer our big question this term: What's Bugging Us?
We discovered that a lot of the native bugs and birds at Grey Lynn School have disappeared...prbably due to all the construction and noise. We are trying to figure out what plants need to go in the garden to attract the right bugs for the birds to eat.
We will keep you updated on our progress. In the meantime, visit our Blog below on the Tui Garden website where we will be posting updates.

Funny Frank - A story about being who you want to be!
We read Funny Frank as a whole class during shared reading. It was written by Dick King Smith.
It's a book about a young cockerel who wanted to be a duck and swim.
Stay tuned for some reviews of Funny Frank. Here's a hint. We really enjoyed it.
Here is a short Mash Up of some of our Kid Pix drawings.

Focussed Learning
One of Room 16s goals is to be focussed learners at our desks. This means when we are at our desks we are only doing things that will support our learning.
Here is our brainstorm:
When we are "caught" being focussed workers, Andrea tells us to go and visit the Focussed Learning Basket. Inside the basket are lots of things we can wear or put on our desks as a reward for being a focussed learner. There is Good Luck Duck, Focus Bears, Focus glasses, champion medals, tiaras (the boys love these) and a lot more. At the end of the block, we exchange the reward for a sticker on our chart. We all have the same chance at getting caught being a focussed worker. It's OUR choice!

Rene Ranger
Red, Rene and Ehtan |
After that I went and played rugby with my friends. Then me and Monty, Red and Jacob went to the clubrooms. On the way there a big kid purposely spilt coke down my jacket. That didn't matter because I got to meet Rene Ranger. He is my favourite player.

The Osasis of the seas
The Osasis of the Seas is a cruise ship the biggest one. It took 6 years to build.
It had a wave slide ladder with 22 pools and 5,000 passengers and 2,000 crew. I have been on a cruise ship before but just a tour, its name was called Pacific Pearl. by Rio

If I were a explorer
If I were an explorer I would explore my mind and let it go free and run with it. I would see all the patterns in my mind, and find all the pigs.(I like pigs) I would cuddle all the fluffy toys and monsters, in my memories. I would paint the best picture in the world. I would run free and explore massive parts of my mind.

The strange creature and his car
The strange creature and his car
Once there a boy named Michael. One night in his deep sleep he woke up in the middle of the night and saw shadows all over his room. Then he noticed the window was open. He jumped to close it but just as he got there a strange looking creature came in. Then he jumped under his bed. The creature jumped down onto his desk and then onto the ground when the creature went out of the room. Michael climbed out of under his bed and closed the window. The creature was in the kitchen trying to open the pantry. As mum heard a sound from the pantry, she ran downstairs. An evil robot appeared and picked up the creature and threw it through the door and they lived happily ever after. by Jonty and Weston
This was Jonty and Weston's first buddy blog session. They wrote it on their own and saved their work for the teacher to upload later. This story took 20 minutes to write. |
