Our First Totara Fun Day

First of all, you may be wondering what a Totara fun day is?   During Totara Fun Day the senior school all rotate around to different teacher. We participate in different activities around dance and drama, photography, science, technology and maths.

Firstly we get together as a whole team and we do Kapa Haka practise. Then we went to Andrea and learned about taking photographs instead of just pictures. We think photographs have a story behind them. We used water as our focus because we are learning about our relationship with water.

Then at 10:00 we switched classes. We went to Room 12 and Sandie and Kerry taught us about measurement. We used cereal and rice to learn about measuring capacity and volume. We were split into groups of four or five and some groups got to make their own cereal. The other groups will make their own cereal next time.  We learned how much rice could fit into a cereal box and we discovered it could hold 28 cups.

We are looking forward to next week where we get to try out two new activities.

Guess who this is drinking the cereal?

GLS Live Week 1 - Shout for Samoa

Talofa and welcome back to Term 3.

This term marks the start of the Rugby World Cup 2011 hosted here in New Zealand. Each community had the opportunity to adopt a team to welcome them to our nation and make them feel at home.

Our school and community have adopted Manu Samoa which is great as Samoan's have historical roots in Grey Lynn.

This weeks' edition is all about Samoa. We have also worked hard on our camera work and use of the green screen.

Enjoy the episode and please comment !

PMI for GLS Live Term 2

Term 3 GLS Live
Review and Solutions.

Problem
Solution
Camera is moving around a lot and making the picture wobbly.
Have a tripod or a camera stand to steady the camera.
Use a music stand to hold the ipad in place.
Can hear the class in the background moving chairs around and some talking.
Class could be doing silent reading outside while the classroom is used as a studio.
News readers not always focussed and looking at the camera.
Hold cue cards directly behind the camera person so the news readers eyes are looking straight ahead.
News readers should practise a lot and speaking clearly and with good volume.
Sometimes wearing green when using the green screen.
Don’t wear green or you can borrow a jumper from a friend.
Don’t wear green on Fridays if you’re a news reader.
Sometimes certain groups didn’t finish their news item so they weren’t part of the programme for that week.
Use your time wisely. Monday to Thursday is enough time to get a story written and illustrated.

School Holiday Edition of GLS Live

We are still learning how to use the green screen. Our goal this week was to have less camera movement which I think the students achieved.

Our next goal is to find a better place to film so we get all of the news readers body in the shot and that the shot makes visual sense.

We will tackle that in Term 3.

Enjoy and please leave us comments or if you are a green screen expert then please leave us some tips !

GLS Live Week 10

This week in New Zealand is Maori Language Week so we decided to do the news show around that week as it ties in with our relationship theme and it is also part of who we are as New Zealanders.

It was also our first time using the green screen so we could have "real" pictures behind us. We are learning all the time and we learned that we have to stand still when filming.

Nau Mai Haere Mai to Room 13s Art Gallery

Welcome to Maori Language week and also our 100 Days of Learning celebrations.

We have been using Te Reo Maori in our classroom more this week and have used Maori titles for our art gallery movie.
Our Maori teacher, Matua Emerson left us this term to move to Wellington and he used this quote to remind us of what is important. He changed tangata(people) to tamariki (children)
Our children are the most important thing in the world.

He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tamariki! He tamariki! He tamariki!

What is the most important thing in the world?
It is children! It is children! It is children.

Enjoy your children's work.
Leave us comments as we love, love, love comments.

They researched, wrote, and filmed the show themselves and Andrea still puts it together in iMovie, but they're getting there.

Complex sentences

Room 13 is learning to change our writing from simple sentences to complex sentences.

We are also setting new writing goals.

Here is our first sentence we worked on together. Andrea said she cannot wait to read all our complex sentences now in our writing books.

The cat ran round the mat. - Simple sentence

The cat ran round the mat and then the dog chased the cat. - Compound sentence

The cat ran round the mat as fast as a cheetah and then the dog chased the cat but he was as slow as a snail, so the super fast cat won. -Complex sentence

Keep watching for our complex sentences and see our writing grow !

Vote Jack for class president

Hi I am Jack and I love Smiggle and I also am sometimes super chatty.
I am running for class president in Room13.
I think I should have it because...
1:I will keep my promise statements.
2:I am in the top 3 groups. And-

My promise statement is...    When Andrea's smelly sticker catalogue gets here I will give my money to her to order them for us to share.
And last but not least my catch phrase is (drum roll please)

Pancakes!

Yes you heard me pancakes mmmmmmmmm!!!

So please vote for Jack

Room 13s Class President

Room 13 has been learning about persuasive language.

Today we held a mock campaign for class president.  We had to state who we were and what we were running for. We had to come up with three good reasons for people to vote for us and then write a catchy phrase so people will remember us.

Some of the class did this in their writing books while Jack and Anetema did theirs on the blog.

We will record some of the class reading theirs and you can decide who would win if this was real.

Room13

EOTC Sharing Time

Part of our Pathways to Learning Model is creating and sharing. We spent Thursday and Friday creating and making posters to display and share our learning.

In order to make this movie the students had to:

  • take the photos
  • upload to iphoto
  • edit the photos
  • upload new photos to imovie
  • add transitions and effects
  • type in text
  • save and export as a quicktime movie
All of this required collaboration and team work.

Keep posted for new movies over the next few days.

Jack and Aum worked hard on their movie.

EOTC Week

Well. We  have had the week of our lives and have been busy making movies, keynotes, and posters to show our learning.

We had to focus on our relationship statements while participating in EOTC and see which statement went with what activity.

Here are the statements again in case you forgot:

Relationships can be positive and negative.
Relationships can be influenced.
Relationships can change.
Relationships involve more than one.
Every relationship has a purpose.
Relationships can be powerful.

Here is Uycess movie about EOTC week. She did this on her own and is her 1st  iMovie.

Thinking about our PE

PE is physical education and we are learning to really think about our games and what we learning while we are playing and having fun.

Kade is our student teacher and he has been teaching us strategy games. We play the game and then Kade calls us back in and we talk about what we did well and what we could change.

Here is a brief movie about our latest game. We still haven't thought of a name for it. We love playing it and now play it in four teams so we all have a go.

Watch the video narrated by Flynn and tell us what you think.
Also, this is Flynn's first attempt at making an iMovie with help from the teacher.

We think he did a stupendous job !

On your mark....get set....GO!

Today was cross country and the sun came out for once this week so we got to run in the warm sun.

We all walked to Grey Lynn Park and got ready for our races. It was exciting seeing all the different ages run. The Year 6's were so fit and competitive and the Year 1's were so tiny and cute - running with smiles on their faces and waving to everyone !

Room 13 had 23 awesome runners who all persevered until the end of the race. Andrea almost lost her voice cheering for us all.

Here are our certificate winners:

The New 3D Phone

The Tiki's reading group are learning to find emotive language in text and understand it's purpose.

They have been looking at advertising and how adverts use different words and phrases to make you want to buy something.

They got a picture and had to decide what it was, how to use it, and how to sell it.

Futsal !

Today Nina and Lucy's dad, Craig and his friend Juliano came to teach us about Futsal.

Futsal is like indoor soccer except it is played with a low bounce ball. This helps you control the ball better and doesn't go bouncing off.

" Today was fun playing Futsal because we got to play a game and work together. " James

" It was sad because it rained and we had to stop early when we were having fun." Rebeka

" It was fun because it was on at morning tea." Aum

We all really enjoyed it and hope some of us can make a team to play in the Futsal League.

Juliano taught us that you say hello as, "Oi" in Portuguese ! He is from Brazil where they are really good at football.

Thanks Craig and Juliano for coming to visit us today.

How does and earthquake in Japan relate to our learning?

This year we are hooking all or learning onto our Relationship Statements.
They are:

Relationships can be positive and negative
Relationships can change
Every relationship has a purpose
Relationships involve more than one
Relationships can be powerful
Relationships can be influenced

Here is our slideshow showing our interpretation of the earthquake in Japan and the relationship statement that fits.
